Smoke may be visible for those in Williams Lake and surrounding areas over the next few days as the BC Wildfire Service conducts a prescribed burn.

Taking advantage of pre-season conditions, the BC Wildfire Service is partnering with Williams Lake Community Forest and Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN) to eliminate combustible materials near the Fraser River, approximately 10 kilometres west of Williams Lake, north of Highway 20.

Prescribed burns are a regular tactic used to reduce the severity of future wildfires and the risk they pose to communities. This wildfire risk reduction treatment will cover approximately 29 hectares of the community forest, aiming to reduce juniper density and build a more fire resilient forest.

WLFN is helping to prepare, control and monitor the burns, bringing their own knowledge of cultural and prescribed burnings.

Burning will be periodic between Thursday, Feb. 27 and Sunday, March 2, and will only proceed if conditions allow for it. Smoke may also be visible to those travelling on Highway 20.
