Prescribed burning, seen here April 4, 2025, continues in the Cariboo Chilcotin.

A series of five prescribes burns will be conducted in the Siwash area about 100 kilometres west of Williams Lake to reduce the risk of wildfires and help restore local ecosystems.

Beginning as early as Wednesday, April 16 until May 15, the BC Wildfire Service, in partnership with the Cariboo Chilcotin Natural Resource District, will be conducting the burn over a total of 270 hectares.

The area, west of the community of Yunesit'in and southwest of Alexis Creek, will be split into five treatment areas to be ignited at different times. Smoke and flames could be visible to nearby residents as well as from Highway 20.

Burning will only proceed if the conditions allow for it and firefighters will closely monitor the area, extinguishing the perimeter of the burn at the end of each day. Smoke from the prescribed burn could be visible for up to 72 hours following ignition.

To learn more about prescribed burning visit prescribedfire.ca, and visit the BC Centre for Disease Control's webpage to learn how to protect yourself from wildfire smoke, including by limiting the amount of time you spend outside on smoky days.
