New Ladysmith-Oceanside MLA Stephanie Higginson is excited to get to work in her new role as caucus chair.
The job description entails managing all of the caucus business, the budget and policy development, as well as organizing agendas and liasing cloesly with the Premier's Office and representing caucus on the legislative assembly management committee.
"What I’ve kind of boiled it down to is I’m sort of the grease in the wheels that keeps caucus working forward," Higginson said. "And also the filter to determine what is critical information that needs to go from the premier to the caucus or from caucus to the premier."
She plans to put "fresh eyes" on current processes to make sure caucus is productive, cohesive and effective.
“One thing I’m known for is having a relentless work ethic," Higginson added. "I think one of the reasons why I was put in this role is because of my experience with governance and governing processes in the past."
Although a first-time MLA, Higginson has governance experience from her time as president of the BC School Trustees Association, a position she held during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was also on the Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools board of education for eight years and served as vice-chair and chair of the board.
Higginson is confident she can use her new role as caucus chair to help her constituents.
“Really what this role is gonna do from a local perspective is I’m working with every member of caucus and I think that means I have really strong relationships with folks that I can utilize and lean on when our constituency is in need of something," she said. "I look forward to being able to utilize those relationships in a way that’s meaningful for Ladysmith-Oceanside."
