A driver may face charges including fleeing police after being tracked down by a dog in Saanich Friday (May 23) night.

A Saanich officer attempted to stop a driver in the 700-block of Claremont Road just before 8 p.m. Instead, the driver “took off at a high rate of speed,” Saanich Police Department said in a news release.

Officers did not pursue the vehicle, but instead searched the area for the vehicle, which was discovered empty in the 5000-block of Del Monte Avenue.

With the assistance of the Integrated Canine Service, officers searched the area and found a suspect hiding in bushes on private property. He surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.

The man subsequently failed a roadside screening.

Officers anticipate recommending charges of dangerous operation of a vehicle, impaired driving, flight from police, breach of a release order and possession of property obtained by crime. The driver remains in custody pending a court appearance.
