O'Keefe Ranch has outlined its plans for the future after a year of "financial challenges."
According to a release by Historic O'Keefe Ranch Society president Bruce Cummings, the Ranch has "worked diligently to maintain its operations and support its community and is optimistic about its future."
Cummings touted the Youth Employment Skills grant throughout the summer, where over 30 jobs for students and youth were provided.
"This initiative helped to ensure a vibrant summer season at the Ranch," Cummings said. "Providing valuable employment opportunities and enhancing the visitor experience."
In response to financial restraints, the Ranch has adjusted its operating schedule, and has focused primarily on events, school tours, bus tours and group bookings, which has led to a "strong revenue month" of October.
“Our community, supporters, and volunteers have truly stepped up to help us through these challenging times,” said Cummings. “We’ve been humbled by the generosity of so many who have contributed their time and money. Our volunteers have been vital in keeping the Ranch running smoothly, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their dedication.”
Looking ahead, the Ranch is "determined" to stay open and is actively pursuing several fundraising initiatives and grant opportunities.
According to Cummings, several fundraising events are being planned, from smaller initiatives like plant sales and yard sales to larger events, perhaps including the much-anticipated return of the Black Tie & Blue Jeans gala. These efforts are designed to generate revenue and raise awareness of the Ranch’s importance to the Okanagan community.
“We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re hopeful for what the future holds,” said Cummings. “With the support of our community and ongoing fundraising efforts, we plan to continue operations until at least March 21, 2027, the end of our lease with the City of Vernon. We are exploring every avenue to ensure that O'Keefe Ranch remains an important cultural and historical resource for future generations.”
