Oak Bay invites residents to learn about the district’s outstanding natural heritage from local nature experts Jacques Sirois and Wyle Thomas.
Sirois, an Oak Bay resident, is a naturalist, bird watcher and restoration enthusiast dedicated to the work of promoting and revitalizing the Victoria Migratory Bird Sanctuary that spans much of the coastline from Saanich to View Royal.
Wylie is a restoration practitioner and botanist actively involved in stewarding Garry oak ecosystems across the southern Island and Gulf Islands.
Residents can also meet the new Oak Bay senior planner and climate action coordinator Megan Woods.
An Oak Bay Coolkit program lets participants learn how gardening with native species can help further conservation by increasing connectivity between isolated natural areas in an urban sea.
The session will also update on the newest designated Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) in Oak Bay and work underway to declare the Victoria region a UNESCO Urban Biosphere Region. Oak Bay is home to six of the nine KBA in Greater Victoria – Trial Islands Ecological Reserve, Gonzales Point and Sahsima (Harling Point), Koweechela (Mary Tod Island), Uplands Park and Cattle Point and Trafalgar Park.
This free community talk is on Wednesday (Oct. 30) at 7 p.m. in the Windsor Pavilion.
