35-hectare wildfire near Chase now held, evacuation order remains in place

Evacuation order and alert remain in effect for properties in the area

UPDATE 8:28 p.m.

The Mount Scatchard wildfire, which sparked on Monday, is now considered being held.

BC Wildfire is reporting the blaze will remain within the current perimeter, control line or boundary based on fuel and weather conditions.

The fire remains at an estimated 35 hectares in size.

Two evacuation alerts and an evacuation order remain in place as the Neskonlith Indian Band assess the situation.

According to the band, wildfire crews have made “excellent progress on containing the wildfire”, and fire activity has significantly reduced.

Crews have established control lines along Harper Road. Two initial attack crews will continue overnight monitoring.

There will be a final assessment at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 2.

Those who have been evacuated due to the fire will be updated as soon as possible.

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) saw no overnight growth to the Scatchard Mountain wildfire.

As of Tuesday morning, July 1, the blaze was estimated to be 35 hectares in size, as it was when the BCWS provided its final update on Monday, June 30, the day the human-caused fire was discovered.

"The unit crew assigned to this fire overnight made good progress supported by two Night Vision Imaging System helicopters," the BCWS said in a Tuesday, July 1 update on the fire.

Two initial attack crews and one unit crew will continue suppression efforts on Tuesday, with air support on standby – to be engaged "as needed to support crew’s efforts as we move into the heat of the day."

BCWS said crews will continue focusing efforts on the fire's north and south flanks.

An evacuation order issued June 30 by the Neskonlith Indian Band remains in effect, as does an evacuation alert issued by the Thompson Nicola Regional District.

BCWS noted the fire is highly visible from the Trans-Canada Highway, which remains open at this time, though the public is encouraged to check Drive BC for additional information.
