A Nanaimo man faces charges after he was arrested with a large quantity of illegal drugs earlier this summer.
According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, Nanaimo RCMP bike unit officers were on patrol when they were alerted to an individual suspected of trafficking street-level drugs in the Old City Quarter.
The suspect was located and arrested just after 2 p.m. on June 27. A search of the suspect’s belongings turned up more than $1,000 in cash, drug scales, a small quantity of suspected crystal methamphetamine, fentanyl and approximately half a kilogram of suspected cocaine.
The individual was later released from police custody to allow investigators sufficient time to conduct their investigation and forward their findings to Crown Counsel, which is now considering charges of three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
“This area has been under considerable pressure for some time from criminals who take advantage of marginalized individuals struggling with various forms of drug additions,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, in the release. “As a result, crime has risen in the area. For this reason, our bike unit in conjunction with City of Nanaimo community safety officers carry out daily patrols of the area. This seizure is the direct result of their hard work and diligence."
