A warning put into place for parts of the Similkameen Valley last week has been prolonged even further due to precipitation and thunderstorms in the surrounding region.
The Lower Similameen Indian Band (LSIB) issued a slope monitor warning via the automated Slope Monitoring System for the Ashnola and Chopaka areas on June 20, due to weather forecasting showing a significant moisture pattern making its way into the Cascade Mountains. The warning was extended until 1 a.m. on Thursday, June 26 and has now been extended once again until 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 28 as many areas are now under severe thunderstorm watch.
"A significant moisture pattern is still present in the Cascade Mountains and will continue to drop moisture," LSIB stated. "LSIB will continue to monitor proactively."
Ashnola affected areas include:
- Tributaries, gullies and slopes near Lower Ashnola River
- Ashnola Road up to 16 kilometres
- Red Bridge Creek
- Crater Creek
- Webster Creek
- Ewart Creek
- Lakeview Creek
Chopaka affected areas include:
- Lower Similkameen River Valley
- Snehumption Creek
- Shoudy Creek
- Robert Creek
- Susap Creek
- Sintlehahten Creek
- Chopaka Road
"Should you spot slope movement, get to a safe place away from the area and then call 9-1-1 to report it," LSIB stated. "Your safety, and the safety of others, must remain the priority."
