The food drive will take place simultaneously in three locations in Sidney on March 29.

Gearheads and good Samaritans will unite this Saturday (March 29) as Torque Masters hosts a food drive benefiting the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the car club will park a selection of eye-catching hot rods at three Sidney grocery store locations: Thrifty Foods (8910 Seventh St), Red Barn Market (10330 McDonald Park Road) and Fairway Market (2531 Beacon Ave).

Members of Torque Masters will be on hand to chat with shoppers about their impressive vehicles while encouraging donations of non-perishable food items to help restock the shelves of the local food bank.

The Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank is currently in need of canned food (beans, vegetables, fruit, tomatoes and meat), pasta, pasta sauce, cookies, crackers, Kraft dinner, jam, peanut butter, rice, school snacks, juice, dry soup, Boost/Ensure and hot/cold cereal. They're also in need of facial tissues, laundry/dish soap, personal hygiene products, disinfectant wipes and toilet paper.

Cash donations are also gratefully accepted.

"One of our mandates is to try and give back to the community," said club board member Ken Coward. "It's a great way to connect with people to talk about the cars and also promote our car show, which will be coming up on the long weekend in August."

The club is hoping the presence of the hot rods will draw attention to the important work of the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank and encourage shoppers to visit one or all three locations on Saturday to admire the cars, meet the members of Torque Masters and drop off donations for those in need.

This event is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if conditions are unfavourable, Torque Masters said.
