Grade 7 students host French Culture Day at Williams Lake school

French immersion students shared what they have learned about the French culture through food, art, trivia and sport

French immersion students at Columneetza Junior Secondary School in Williams Lake hosted a day of activities on Friday, June 6 to celebrate French culture with their peers.

"We've been doing this every year," said Colin O'Keefe who helps organize French Culture Day at the school. "This has been a long tradition at Columneetza...it's a great way for all the kids who take part in French to come out and see the fun of it and to practice a little - un petit peu - of the language," O'keefe said.

"It gives the Grade 7's a chance to show some responsibility, run some stations, leadership," said Lacy Custance, the school's current Grade 7 French immersion teacher whose students were the ones hosting French Culture Day.

Custance's students spent the day running stations for visiting classes, offering their peers a chance to learn about french culture through food, art, trivia and sport.

"Nous est entrain de faire les choses de la culture en française comme les masques, le bocce ball, les crêpes et les fromages," said Mya Hill, one of the French immersion students, as she explained what they were up to. Hill said the students were doing things from the French culture such as making masks inspired by the Mardis Gras traditions in Louisianna, playing pétanque which is a game similar to bocce ball, eating crêpes and, of course, eating lots of cheese.

"We're sharing all the stuff we've been learning," said Khloe Bremner, another student helping with French Culture day.

In School District 27, students based in Williams Lake and 100 Mile House can register to the Early French Immersion program.
