Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the Chilcotin on Feb. 5, 2025.

According to the Environment Canada website, a period of very cold wind chills is expected overnight on Wednesday, Feb. 5 and possibly continuing overnight of Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025.

The warning specifies Puntzi Mountain as the location for the coldest temperatures, often the coolest spot on the Chilcotin Plateau.

"Very cold temperatures in combination with light winds will create windchill values between -35 and -40 overnight," warns Environment Canada.

While temperatures are expected to moderate during the day, wind chill values may reach -40 C over night both nights before warming on Friday.

The advisory includes a list of cold-related symptoms to watch for including: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

People are advised to cover up any exposed areas to prevent frostbite.

"If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside," states the warning.
