Esk'etemc begins construction on new daycare

At the moment the daycare has been authorized to provide 82 spaces

The community of Esk'etemc, southwest of Williams Lake, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on May 15 for a new community daycare.

Excavation for Cathy's Daycare Early Learning Centre began on May 16, just a few weeks following the beginning of construction for the community's pit house which will be located behind the daycare.

Calvin Dubray, the community's education director, said he hopes the building will be ready by November.

Dubray was involved in securing funding for the daycare and helped co-develop the project with Bridge Community Development, Esk'etemc's development management team. He said the project will include contributions from local trades people, labourers and artists.

"This is going to expand the spaces," Dubray said, explaining there already is a daycare in the community but it doesn't have after school spaces.

The new daycare has been authorized to provide 12 spaces for children under 36 months, 25 spaces for children between 36 months to four years old and 45 spaces for school-age children who need after-school care.
