In promoting safety on the water, the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 59 in Deep Bay is now providing loaner flotation devices for infants, children and youth to prevent tragic drownings.
In partnership with the Regional District of Nanaimo, RCMSAR have now installed a Kid's Don't Float loaner station at the Horne Lake boat ramp. It's up an running to support families safety on the water this summer.
Steve Corcoran, a volunteer at Station 59 Deep Bay, initiated the proposed station project and with other RCM SAR volunteers will be responsible for maintaining the station and personal floatation devices (PFDs).
PFDs at the station range in sizes suitable for Infants, children and youth, ages six months to 16 years.
It's generously supported by the RCMSAR Kid's Don't Float Sponsor, SSA Marine and RLC Enterprises and the Horne Lake campground operator contractor.
Corcoran said he was very impressed with the RDN team, who made the project run smoothly and RLC Enterprises, who did an excellent job installing the station using the board provided by RCMSAR and materials from RDN.
"It's a great team effort on behalf of the community," he said.
RCMSAR volunteers, in support of water safety, hold fundraisers and attend local community events throughout the summer.
The money generated will not only pay to replace lost or worn out PFDs, but also help in the search for new locations to build more PFD loaners stations in the community.
Station 59 will next be represented at the Dog Days of Bowser on July 5 at the Bowser Royal Canadian Legion.
