Despite their already busy roles in the community, emergency services staff are stepping up for a fundraiser to help fill shelves at the Salvation Army food bank in Williams Lake.
Brielle Gagnon, a nursing assistant to the emergency room at Cariboo Memorial Hospital, said staff at the hospital decided they wanted to give back over the holidays.
“We wanted to do something for the community,” said Gagnon. After reaching out to the Salvation Army about potentially sponsoring a family, they learned the food bank is at an all-time low for supplies.
So staff decided as a group to reach out and challenge other emergency service personnel to help as well.
“Everybody was on board just like that, no hesitation, which was amazing,” she said.
Members of Emergency Health Services, RCMP, Williams Lake Fire Department, Central Cariboo Search and Rescue, and Cariboo Memorial Hospital staff, will all be asking community members to donate non-perishable food items to a “Cram the Emergency Car” event on Dec. 20.
With emergency vehicles stationed outside of Save-On Foods, Wal Mart, and Wholesale Club from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 20, the participants hope to fill their vehicles with food items to support the food bank and restock the depleted shelves.
“What greater time than the holiday season,” said Gagnon, about the opportunity to get together and give back, helping resupply the food bank into the new year.
