It was another record year for Coldest Night of the Year Oceanside, which surpassed its fundraising record again, with $122,721 in donations.
More than 300 walkers on 39 teams marched in the cold on Feb. 22 in support of people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
The fundraising total smashed the goal of $100,000 set by organizers Island Crisis Care Society, and also bested last year's impressive total of $115,100.
"It was an amazing night with a great turnout," said Violet Hayes, ICCS executive director.
The community walk aims to raise awareness and support for those experiencing homelessness in the Oceanside area.
CNOY allows participants to experience a small sliver of what it is like to be out in the cold and come together in community action for change.
Funds raised will go to support programming for people who have experienced homelessness or precarious housing in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area, including Island Crisis Care's community-based programs that provide essential skill-building for clients, with topics that include healthy eating; literacy; art therapy; job readiness training; communication; and cultural learning, according to ICCS.
ICCS is a registered, non-profit society that operates in the Nanaimo and the Parksville Qualicum Beach area. It provides housing and programs for more than 250 people daily throughout its eight housing sites, including Orca Place in Parksville.
