David Dickson of Williams Lake has been recognized by the Canadian government as a dedicated leader in emergency management with over two decades of service to B.C. communities.

On Wednesday, Feb. 26, Dickson was one of 129 recipients presented the Emergency Management Exemplary Service Award by the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, along with Sherry Romanado, Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Emergency Preparedness.

It's no secret that Dickson has played a crucial role in ESS services.

He's been involved with deployments, leading evacuations due to wildfires, flooding, and landslides, including the significant Cariboo Chilcotin wildfires in 2017,” noted a news release about the awards, praising him for his unwavering commitment.

The release went on to note his efforts extend beyond emergency response; he has actively participated in community policing, Indigenous relations and the Situation Table, helping vulnerable individuals secure housing and jobs.

As a valued member of the Rotary Club of Williams Lake, Dickson has assisted organized fundraising events to support communities during the devastating wildfire season of 2017. His compassionate approach is exemplified by his personal involvement in assisting evacuees, ensuring that even those beyond his jurisdiction receive essential support.

Colleagues respect Dickson for his integrity, leadership, and deep commitment to the community, making him a cornerstone of the ESS network in B.C.

His contributions have not only improved emergency management practices but have also fostered a spirit of resilience and support among those he serves. Relationships / partnerships and building teams are the fundamental keys to successes and his guiding principles.
Through his efforts, he has made a significant impact on emergency management and community well-being.

In 2019 he also received an Award of Distinction at the 22nd annual Community Safety and Crime Prevention Awards.

Launched in 2017, this recognition program is a partnership between federal, provincial, and territorial (FPT) governments as agreed to by the FPT Ministers responsible for emergency management.

So far, EMESA has recognized the exceptional contributions of 494 individuals and groups across all provinces and territories in Canada.

Award recipients are presented with a medallion featuring an emblem created by the Canadian Heraldic Authority. The emblem was designed to be relevant across all disciplines, all orders of government, all hazards and all regions. Symbolism includes: protection and safety, hazards and resilience, and Canada. The emblem is included in the Public Register of Arms, Flags and Badges of Canada.
