As of noon on Wednesday, May 7, there will be a Category 2 and 3 open burning prohibition throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre (CAFC).

The CAFC announced the ban Monday, May 5, noting the ban will include the Tsilhqot'in (Xeni Gwet'in) Declared Title Area.

All open burns of the Category 2 and 3 size, must be extinguished by noon on May 7.

Lands within municipal areas that are covered by the ban include parks, conservancies and recreation areas.

Recreation sites, recreation trails, interpretive forest sites and trail-based recreation areas, ecological reserves, wildlife management areas and private managed forest lands are also included in the ban.

The prohibition includes the use of binary exploding targets, fireworks, burn barrels or burn cages, controlled air incinerators, air curtain burners and carbonizers.

"If you are in a municipality, be sure to check if local prohibitions are in place," notes the CAFC news release.

If you are within a regional district or improvement district, this prohibition applies as well as any local prohibition issued by the regional district.

Campfires, no larger than .5 metres by .5 metres, are still permitted within the CAFC.
