Williams Lake city council approved a variance permit to allow for a new communications tower to go in along Highway 20 in the city.

Shared Tower applied for a variance permit to allow for the tower, which is higher than the normally allowable limit for accessory buildings and structures of 10 metres, at approximately 30 metres.

The proposed wireless communications facility (tower), would be located near Tolko in the Williams Lake River Valley area at 45 Highway 20, to improve telecommunications network coverage in the south Williams Lake area.

The tower will support the co-location of antennas for three different carriers and allow for later additions as well.

City staff had been working to find a suitable location for an additional tower to improve cell service in the city since March 2023.

Council voted unanimously to support the variance and no comments were received from the public during the public hearing or public consultation period. No timeline was provided for the installation of the new tower.
