ICBC’s 2024 statistics for vehicle collisions are out and Nanaimo has five of the top 10 most dangerous intersections on Vancouver Island.
Intersections along the old Island Highway through Nanaimo saw majority of vehicle pileups throughout last year. Nanaimo's highest-collision intersection for 2024 was the old Island Highway, Bowen Road and Norwell Drive with 73 crashes, followed by the old Island Highway, Aulds Road and Hammond Bay Road, which saw 72 crashes.
The old Island Highway at Rutherford and Mostar roads intersection, which took top spot in 2023, tallied 68 crashes, and the old Island Highway at Enterprise Road intersection racked up 64 collisions.
The Aulds Road and Nanaimo Parkway intersection, ranking Nanaimo's fifth-most crash prone, was the scene of 58 collisions throughout 2024. The intersection also shares a municipal border with Lantzville, qualifying it as Lantzville’s most dangerous intersection for the year as well.
To help curb collisions, a red light camera monitors the intersection at old Island Highway, Bowen Road and Norwell Drive intersection and a combination speed and red light camera operates at the old Island Highway, Aulds Road, Hammond Bay Road intersection.
ICBC crash data is gathered from reports made to the insurance corporation by insured registered vehicle owners, drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
