City council in Williams Lake voted in support of a motion to approve free public transit on federal election day Monday, April 28, 2025.
Both conventional transit services and HandyDART services will be free for the public on general voting day to help remove barriers to voting.
Prompted by BC Transit, Rob Warnock, director of municipal services, issued a report asking for council's approval of offering the free service, bringing it to the regular council meeting on April 1.
"Please get out [on the] 28th and get your vote counted," said Mayor Surinderpal Rathor, emphasizing the importance of exercising a person's democratic right to vote.
Lost revenue for the day of free service is estimated at between $250 and $350 and so Warnock said "offering free transit for residents without incurring travel expenses could be a good incentive to assist voter turnout" in his report.
