Emergency crews were called to Departure Bay Road at Loat Street after a 13-year-old was struck by a vehicle.

A teenager was taken to hospital with multiple broken bones after being struck by a vehicle near Departure Bay's Kin Park this afternoon.

Emergency personnel rushed to the scene of Departure Bay Road and Loat Street at 2:15 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, after a 13-year-old boy was hit by a sport-utility vehicle.

Witnesses said the boy was in the crosswalk heading in the direction of the park when the incident occurred.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue Capt. Jason Battie said the boy's injuries were fairly serious, including multiple fractures, but the patient was conscious while receiving treatment from first responders.

"He's just been transported to [Nanaimo Regional General Hospital], we don't know the full detail of the injuries," Battie said.

The motorist remained on scene and was co-operating with the investigation.

Traffic is being redirected at the location.
