Parksville council has awarded a $1.1-million contract for pavement overlay on Alberni Highway, Stanhope Road and Temple Street, as well as patching in various locations.
Most of that money, approximately $890,000, will come from the Growing Communities Fund distributed by the provincial government.
“It’s not just paving for the sake of paving," Mayor Doug O'Brien said during council's Oct. 7 meeting. "The conditions have been recommended that these locations are in need of it by the paving assessment and so that’s why we’re going ahead with it at this time.”
Council voted unanimously to award the contract to a local company called Haylock Bros. Paving Ltd. for $1,105,225 plus GST.
The staff recommendations are based on data provided by a Tetra Tech Canada Inc. "ride van” which surveyed the city's roads last year.
The timeline for the paving is not yet finalized, according to Manager of Engineering Ayla Defoor, who added the work will also be weather dependent.
The order of areas paved will be up to the contractor, Defoor said.
The city used a public procurement method for a number of weeks, she added, and received one bid from Haylock Bros.
