A new event on Gabriola Island will showcase performers and artists on May long weekend.

May’d on the Rock will be a self-guided event with 43 locations where people can experience studios, markets, galleries and group showings. Admission for the event will be free and it will be hosted May 17-18 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m both days.

According to a news release, the event will be a relaxed presentation of things made on Gabriola Island, including demonstrations and active studios. There will also be four ticketed concerts to showcase the island’s music scene. There will be a dance party on Saturday at the community hall. Tangled Roots and guests will play roots music to raise money for the People for a Healthy Community's grocery program food bank at the Gabriola Arts and Heritage Centre. Paul Gellman and friends will play mostly original acoustic music at the golf course.

On Sunday there will be an evening of music from singer-songwriters at the Phoenix Auditorium.

The concerts will all start around 7 p.m., according to the news release.

Sunday will also feature a dance performance by Mara Brenner’s Gabriola Dance Performance Team by donation. It will start at 6 p.m. at the Gabriola Arts and Heritage Centre.

Two improv theatre workshops will also be offered, one for youths and one for adults. They will be on Saturday and Sunday at 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Agi Hall.

Tickets for the events can be purchased online at simpli.events/u/maydontherock or by e-mailing maydontherock@gmail.com.

The hosts are hoping to make May’d on the Rock an annual event. More information can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
