Encore! Women’s Choir presents their eclectic spring concert, Here’s to Song, on Saturday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at the New Life Community Baptist Church at 1839 Tzouhalem Rd., Duncan.

Led by music director, Michelle Weckesser and accompanied by pianist, Naomi Barclay, the dedicated and fun-loving singers in the choir are excited to perform for you, said a press release for the show.

"For this concert, I’ve chosen a variety of musical styles to reflect music’s unique ability to reach us in ways that words alone often can’t,” said director Michelle Weckesser. “Whether it’s joy, sorrow, love, or grief, music has a way of piercing straight to the heart. It can soothe anxiety, ease pain, bring peace — or simply delight us, pure and simple. So, we say, Here’s to Song!"

Program highlights include songs from Canadian composers, coast to coast. The title number, 'Here’s to Song', comes from Cape Breton composer Allister MacGillivray and 'Nothing Quite Like That' (The Westcoast Song) comes from Vancouver Island composer Deborah Sumner. There is also a heart-warming arrangement of Gordon Lightfoot’s 'Pussy Willows, Cat-tails' and a fun, fast-paced arrangement of the French-Canadian folk song 'Alouette'.

People who love spirituals will enjoy the high-spirited arrangements of 'The Battle of Jericho' and 'Praise His Holy Name' and the slower, more contemplative arrangement of 'The Wayfaring Stranger'. Classical music lovers will be thrilled with Mozart’s 'Dies Irae' and entranced with Frode Fjellheim’s modern arrangement of 'Dona Nobis Pacem'.

The choir will also be singing some contemporary pieces from film and stage, including 'This is Me' from The Greatest Showman, 'What was I Made For?' from Barbie and 'Look for the Light' from Only Murders in the Building.

One of the choir's favourite pieces, a jazzed-up version of 'Bill Bailey, Won’t you Please Come Home' will have you smiling and humming along in your seats, the choir promises.

Tickets are available from Volume One Bookstore in Duncan, from choir members, and at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The usual tasty homemade refreshments will be served at the break.
