The Shady Rest in Qualicum Beach has a new owner and is now open seven days a week.

Slava Govorov purchased the nearly 101-year-old pub and restaurant in late November.

"I think people are pretty excited," he said. "We're working on the restaurant part right now, so some painting and just cleaning and decorating and all that."

For now, he's made some "small tweaks" to the menu but eventually plans to "modernize" it and adapt it based on what is selling and what is not.

"The clam chowder is staying, so nothing to worry there," Govorov, also the owner of Ricky's All Day Grill in Parksville, said with a laugh.

He said he was drawn to the Shady Rest because of its nice location and great view of the water.

"When I walked in there and I looked out of the window, I think that it was sold in my mind," Govorov added. "There's very few places like that on the Island."

The iconic waterfront pub dates back to 1924, first built by the Kinkade family, who owned and operated it until 1985, when it was purchased by Wayne Duncan.

Govorov's future plans for the Shady include hosting live entertainment on the pub side.

"We're looking forward to getting to know the community," he said.
