Port Alberni's Port Authority (PAPA) has appointed a Co-CEO beginning July 1.

Mike Carter, who is currently PAPA's vice-president of operations, has been appointed the new role. He will work alongside current CEO Zoran Knezevic.

This decision was made to advance leadership continuity and growth within the port community, and to set PAPA up for long-term succession.

"I am privileged to have been given this opportunity ... and look forward to helping the Port realize its full potential," said Carter in a recent press release.

Carter has been an employee of PAPA for more than 15 years, serving different leadership roles.

"With Mike's deep operational roots, intimate knowledge of PAPA's history, and professional relationships he is the ideal partner to lead us into the future," said president and CEO, Zoran Knezevic.

"His experience from the ground up gives him a unique perspective on the work, the people, and the long-term potential of the port authority," Knezevic added.

The Co-CEO position will work alongside the President/CEO and the board of directors.

"The new leadership model provides an opportunity to build on existing leadership expertise, by developing future leadership capacity as PAPA grows," said Shelley Chrest, board chair. "The model also allows Zoran...to focus on future initiatives and developments on behalf of the port."

Carter will hold this position for three years until a reevaluation has taken place on the structure of the position.
