Photos: 45th Williams Lake Harvest Fair a success

Williams Lake had its 45th Harvest Fair this weekend with a brand new event: zucchini races.

Rabbits, chickens and even a peacock were brought to the 45th annual Harvest Fair this weekend at the Williams Lake Curling Club.

President Tammy Tugnum was smiling Sunday at noon and relieved it was not as hot as it had been on Saturday. "It was so hot yesterday that our ice cream vendor sold out of ice cream," she said. Attendance was on par with last year and once again, the entries were "amazing," she added. "I could not believe all the incredible vegetables."

Collages, quilts and vegetable sculptures came together in the exhibit hall to create a great display of local art and creativity. Among the vendors selling wood carvings, candles and crocheted items was Hayley Paupst and her books. Paupst meticulously cuts the edges of a book’s pages to create the image of your choice. “I really like to watch the pictures come together one page at a time,” she said.

Paupst has lived in Williams Lake for about eight years, and while she’s brought her books to the market before, this was her first time vending at the Harvest Fair. “They invited me, and I was flattered and excited and thought that would be awesome,” she said.

Tugnum said it takes over 200 volunteers to put on the fair each year from set-up, to judging, to take-down. "Everybody pitches in," she said. Partnerships are also key, especially for the expansive quilt display.

The first-ever zucchini races were well-attended. Children created vehicles out of zucchinis and vegetables, using wooden wheels. Three vehicles raced at a time on the the track made by Duane Destree.
