Local anglers are encouraged to attend three events highlighting freshwater fishing in the Cowichan Valley over the upcoming Fathers’ Day weekend.

Local fish and game clubs, fish hatcheries, community organizations, and avid anglers are organizing the fishing events in Cowichan, and in other waterways on Vancouver Island.

Family Fishing Weekend annually offers families an opportunity to find outdoor adventure in their own backyard, and possibly develop a lifelong passion for freshwater fishing.

The first event will be held at Mayo Lake, located near Skutz Falls, on June 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the second will be held at Ladysmith’s Bush Creek Hatchery on June 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the third will be held at Fuller Lake in Chemainus on Jan. 15, from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.

These fishing events welcome anglers of all experience levels, and those new to angling or looking for a refresher are welcomed by fishers keen to share their knowledge about the sport.

Many events provide optional hands-on instruction as well as loaner rods, reels and tackle.

Event activities include fishing clinics, fly-tying clinics, free rod and tackle loans and stream clean-up projects as well as fishing derbies.

“More British Columbians are planning summer adventures at home and looking to discover amazing experiences in the province, and Family Fishing Weekend is a great place to start, or continue, that exploration,” said Stacy Webb, director of marketing and communications for the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC.

“Fishing is something you can enjoy in every part of the province and in urban and rural settings.”

Jenna Merth, outreach coordinator for the FFSBC, said fishing licence sales are the strongest the society has seen since 2020/21 when there was a surge as people discovered freshwater fishing while looking for activities close to home.

“Purchases are up for all age groups, with annual licences up 25 per cent for the 16-25 year old age range,” she said.

“Family Fishing Weekend is set up so people can learn more about the sport and connect with the angling community.”
