The North Sound, a duo from Saskatchewan, will bring their brand of country/folk to the PQB area on April 11 and April 12, with concerts in both Qualicum Beach and Parksville.
The couple, multi-instrumentalist Forrest Eaglespeaker and vocalist Nevada Eaglespeaker, will perform as part of the Oceanside Folk/Roots and Blues Club's ongoing concert season, and also as part of the Full Spectrum Folk Concert series at the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville, according to a news release.
“We are really excited to have them here," said Mick Sherlock, promoter for both events. "There’s not a lot of live Indigenous music available in many of our smaller communities. This young couple have something good to say and have travelled a long way to say it.”
Whilst Forrest handles the bulk of the writing duties, the couple share the singing, and in the process, they have developed the pristine harmonies that only come together when the singers are so well aligned.
Since beginning in 2014, the duo has seen four of their singles reach number one on the Indigenous Music Countdown, as well as Saskatchewan’s MBC Radio, while also winning SaskMusic‘s Indigenous Artist of the Year award two years running (2020 and 2021).
Their songs weave through themes of family, connection, recovery, addiction and sacrifice. Through this journey they have forged the core of a rock solid foundation for their music and relationship. Their story is one of two people who worked together and found a collective voice to breathe life into tribulations and traditions.
“This is how I pay homage to my heritage as a Blackfoot person, an Indigenous person. I express this through song and story, and use the tools that we’ve been given to survive," Forrest said, when asked about music. "When we are onstage, we aren’t trying to hide behind anything, and we don’t hold anything back. It means I might be too honest, but that’s okay. It’s the space that we create where we let ourselves go into the moment.”
The April 11 concert is at The Rotary House in Qualicum Beach. Tickets are $32 and are available by contacting Sherlock at 403-608-7280 or micksherlock58@gmail.com.
