Penticton joins Toronto as Canadian cities with 'breathtaking' art display

The all-natural light display will stay open in Penticton until June 8

A world-renowned experience of colour and light is in Penticton this weekend, marking the first time an acclaimed U.K.-based art display has been set up in B.C.

The "Luminarium: Arborialis" attraction, by artist Alan Parkinson, can be found inside Okanagan Lake Park until June 8, as part of the fifth annual Ha Ha Ha Kidzfest.

Toronto is the only other place in Canada that is currently hosting the 11,000-square-foot walk-in exhibit, event organizers said. It also appeared in Ottawa from May 8 to 13.

The all-natural light display features mazes, winding paths and domes.

"With it coming from so far and having not been here before, it is a really great way for us to celebrate festival No. 5," said Jacki Kliever, Ha Ha Ha Kidzfest coordinator.

Geared toward kids and adults, the walk-in exhibit is wheelchair accessible.

The structure also features special echo rooms and cooling areas.

"Visitors are transported and immersed into an amazing world of light and subtle and saturated hues, for a unique sensory experience, and brings visual art in places where you wouldn’t expect it," festival organizers said about the display in a press release.

Ha Ha Ha Kidzfest runs until June 7, but the art installation itself will stay open one more day on Sunday (June 8) inside the downtown park.

The "Luminarium: Arborialis" attraction costs $8 to attend if purchased online or in advance. At the gate, tickets are $10.

"We’re excited to see this breathtaking exhibit set up at Okanagan Lake Park next week,” Penticton Mayor Julius Bloomfield said on May 29, ahead of the exhibit's opening. “Thank you to the event organizers for bringing this world-renowned feature to our backyard, which is a first for British Columbia."
