A documentary honouring Canada's legacy in Afghanistan hailed as “brilliant,” “essential viewing,” and “a quintessential Canadian film” lands in a Saanich cinema with a special screening May 29.
Fallen Heroes: Their Journey Home – produced by Karen Storwick and Robert Curtin of Combined Forces Production – chronicles the experiences of Canadian Armed Forces members who served in Afghanistan.
More than 40,000 Canadians were deployed during the 14-year campaign. The film brings to light the immense sacrifices made, the friendships forged, and the often overlooked legacy of one of the most defining military efforts in modern Canadian history.
“This film is about honour, remembrance, and education,” Storwick said. “We owe it to our soldiers – and to all Canadians – to preserve this history and share their stories with the world. This is a legacy project for our country.”
Canada played an extraordinary role in Afghanistan, commanding NATO operations in Kandahar and the Persian Gulf, and was the only country in the field operating tanks. Beyond combat, Canadian soldiers demonstrated compassion and cultural awareness, with many reading the Koran before deployment.
The response to the film has been overwhelmingly emotional. One veteran wrote, “You have done our country an enormous service… everyone in the country should see it.”
Fallen Heroes: Their Journey Home screens Thursday, May 29 at 7 p.m. at SilverCity Cineplex at 3130 Tillicum Rd. in Saanich.
Tickets are $25 for the general public, and $17.50 for military personnel, veterans, family members, seniors, and children under 15. Tickets are available online or at the door, while supplies last.
