Arrowsmith Potters’ Guild celebrates 30 years this June and is hosting a public anniversary celebration on June 14.

The public is invited to drop by to take in free pottery making demonstrations, studio tours, participate in a make and take table, and enjoy cake and balloons.

The guild was formed in April 1995 from a growing need to have a place where local artisans could gather, practice their craft and share their knowledge through classes and workshops.

Approximately 40 potters gathered and elected the group's first board of directors, who created the pottery collective. The name "Arrowsmith Potters’ Guild" was chosen to represent the wide area from which the participating members came from – Lantzville to Bowser, and Parksville to Port Alberni.

The guild initially held their meetings at the arts council building, but quickly outgrew the space.

Eventually, the old Canadian Pacific Railway station was chosen, with an agreement struck between VIA Rail and the City of Parksville, which saw the city lease the building and then sublet it to the guild. Since 2006, the guild has leased the station from the Island Corridor Foundation.

The members of Arrowsmith Potters’ Guild established a new home for creatives through determination and hard work. All construction, renovations, and restoration completed at this historic building were accomplished by members of the guild. Between years of neglect from the railway company and extensive vandalism, much work was to be done on this building. Debris was cleared, and the interior and exterior were cleaned, painted and restored.

Much of the original character of the station can still be seen today — from the brilliant red and white exterior, to the classic wide plank board walk.

One of the guild's early goals was to become a recognizable education facility in the community. Today, many classes and workshops are offered for all skill levels throughout the year, available to members and non-members alike.

The studio space features eight wheels, three kilns and a slab roller, in addition to the innumerable other tools and glazes on hand for those using the facility.

The shop showcases hundreds of pieces made by some of the members, with the selection changing frequently. It is a convenient stop for those looking to admire and support the talents of local artisans. The works of guild members can be found at the various markets and sales held throughout the year in the community.

All aspects of the old train station are still run and maintained by volunteers, with some original founding members still active.

Without the continued commitment of the Arrowsmith Potters’ Guild members and the board of directors, the guild would not be the success that it is known for today.

The Arrowsmith Potter's Guild Train Station Pottery Shop is located at 600 Alberni Hwy, close to the water tower. It is open Monday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
