Marie Sharpe Elementary students and staff enjoyed a powwow as part of end of the year celebrations on June 26.
The school sat in a circle as dancers performed and Cecil Sheena taught the audience about the powwow and dances.
Before the mini grand entry for the five dancers, Reggie Sandy, a young dancer who is also a student of 150 Mile House Elementary School, performed the grass dance. Sheena explained how before the invention of lawnmowers, dancers would come in with a high-stepping dance to stomp down the area to open it up for the rest of the event.
The mini grand entry then had the five dancers, Dave Archie, Sharae Wycotte, Gary Stieman, Cecil Sheena, and Sandy all dance around the large circle of students and staff before other dances were featured like the crow dance and a women's traditional dance by Wycotte.
The entire school was then invited to join in and dance in the field before everyone had lunch together.
