Before you pop your next pop tab into the recycling, the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) in Williams Lake wants them instead for the BC and Alberta Guide Dogs.
As it turns out, the OES in Williams Lake has collected eight 15-litre pails of aluminum tabs, including tabs from pop, beer, juice and cat food cans. Once collected, Marg Bublitz, a member of OES, will find an aluminum buyer, and proceeds will be given to the BC and Alberta Guide Dogs. Its service dogs work with people with autism and PTSD, amongst other conditions.
Bublitz said the OES groups in Quesnel and Prince George challenged Williams Lake to a competition to collect the most aluminum tabs. Despite the 120 litres they’ve collected, she’s afraid Quesnel and Prince George are winning.
“It’ll be the feather in Williams Lake’s cap if we beat them.”
Home Hardware in Williams Lake stepped in to donate the buckets after Bublitz bought two buckets herself.
“We’re happy to help out,” said Home Hardware’s general manager Scott Tucker. Home Hardware also collects aluminum tabs and has been doing so for several years.
The weigh-in for the competition is in March 2024. If you have any aluminum tabs you’d like to give, contact Marg Bublitz at 250-398-5225.
