Williams Lake Fire department visits Marie Sharpe school for summer fun

Every year, the fire department brings a splash to the students before they leave school for the summer

Students at Marie Sharpe Elementary School in Williams Lake had a taste of the summer fun that's soon to come on Friday, June 20.

The Williams Lake Fire Department parked one of its fire engines next to the school yard, where it hooked up to a fire hydrant and sent water soaring above the heads of students and teachers.

It turned out to be a perfect day for the annual event, with the sun beaming down on the students who were all dressed in bathing suits or clothes they didn't mind getting soaked as they ran in and out from under a fountain of water spraying from the fire truck.

While many teachers stood along the side to watch the show and supervise the students, some got involved in the fun, getting completely drenched as the shower of water and splash of puddles refreshed them from the sun's heat.

This was newly-staffed Vice-principal of the Kindergarten to Grade 6 school Heather McKinnon said this was her first 'Fun Day' since she started at the school a few months ago.

"It's a tradition, most of the schools in the district do a little Fun Day at the end of June, and we're celebrating our learning, having some fun together as a school community," McKinnon said.

The day began with stations set up for the students, bouncy castles, a visit from the RCMP and some food favourites including donuts, ice cream and hot dogs from the school's Parent Advisory Council.

"And now we've got the fire department here for some water fun and we're sure glad that the weather held off, the kids had a great day," said McKinnon.
