Volunteers are the backbone of many community efforts. Their activities may include pulling invasive broom, rescuing stranded boaters, supporting families and enriching cultural life.

Volunteer contributions are celebrated across the country during National Volunteer Week which runs from April 27 to May 4 this year. The annual event is an opportunity to thank volunteers for their time and talents, while also encouraging new community members to get involved.

The Ladysmith Community Fund Society is marking the occasion by hosting its second Better Together! volunteer fair. The event takes place on Thursday, May 1, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Eagles Hall, 921 First Ave.

Admission to the fair is free and all are welcome to attend. Organizers say it’s a great way to learn more about the organizations doing good work in the community and to discover how your own skills and experience might be just what’s needed.

Participating groups include Big Shop of Horrors Charity Society, Community Circles Restorative Justice Society, Ladysmith Community Fund Society, Ladysmith Festival of Lights and Ladysmith Health Care Auxiliary to name just a few.

Community groups and non-profit organizations interested in participating can reserve a table by visiting the society’s website at ladysmithcommunityfund.ca/events to download the registration form. A $25 fee applies.

Residents are encouraged to take part in the celebrations, explore volunteer opportunities, meet new people and help make a difference in Ladysmith.
