VIDEO: Williams Lake Apple Pie Society strikes again

Lunch volunteers at the Williams Lake Seniors Activity enjoyed a sweet surprise

The latest group to be singled out by the Apple Pie Society are the folks who make and serve lunches at the Williams Lake Seniors Activity Centre.

On Tuesday, April 8, the society surprised the lunch volunteers with fresh pies, arriving just as a lunch volunteer meeting got underway.

Speaking on behalf of the society, Bette McLennan said the community knows lunch has been served at the centre for more than 25 years.

“We heard last year you guys did 11,000 lunches in one year. So we figure you really deserve apple pie,” McLennan said.

There are 30 regular volunteers and about 50 total on the list.

Some people have volunteered almost since the start, including Madge Struthers who makes Denver sandwiches. Iva Mowry has been making five lemon pies a week for 14 years.

Volunteering their time keeps them busy and guaranteed a social outing and they are also happy to see happy people enjoying a reasonably-priced lunch.

When asked by centre manager Kylie Greene other reasons they volunteer, their answers ranged from making new friends, listening to stories from seniors to filling a void after a partner dies.

Anyone age 50-plus can join the Seniors Activity Centre for a membership of $25 a year.

Membership dues add up and help the centre become eligible for grants.

The lunch program is looking for junior seniors, said member Tina Derksen.

With a mission to find individuals and groups in the community that have done outstanding service, the Apple Pie Society honours someone or a group every couple of months.

McLennan said this time six people made the pies and they had seven made in less than an hour.
