Students at Tatla Lake School now have a log shelter in the playground.
Kelly Emke with the Tatla Lake Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) said it will provide shade and shelter for students and can help facilitate new types of outdoor experiences and play.
“It also has the potential to serve as a gathering area to support use of the sports field and arena area,” Emke said, noting they hope to add picnic tables in the near future.
The project was made possible through many donations.
Tsi Del Del Enterprises donated the wood, all sourced from the West Chilcotin, including Douglas-fir logs for the structure, spruce logs for the rafters and two-by-fours.
Kurt Fischer donated his time and talent to prepare the design and construction drawings.
Peter Arnold Log Homes Ltd donated the transportation of the materials, the time and labour for the foundation set up, installation of the structure, as well as the roofing materials and labour.
“Peter was also a key person in interfacing with other donors to make this project possible,” Emke said.
Lars Satre donated equipment and operating time for the foundation and Ken Dyck was available for regrading and finishing of the site.
Emke noted the PAC paid for the labour required in the log yard in Williams Lake, because of the generous support of many people in the community towards PAC fundraising efforts over the past few years.
“We are proud to have been able to secure such an impressive structure, using locally sourced materials and craftsmanship,” Emke said. “We hope this project will enhance the outdoor experiences of our students in Tatla Lake for many years to come.”
The PAC enjoyed celebrating with the students, staff, and community members on Monday, May 6th during Tatla Lake School’s monthly community connections event.
“Community members enjoyed the opportunity to see the structure and get to visit and enjoy refreshments with students, school staff, and our school PAC.”
