SilverStar carnival supports Vernon hospital as worker battles cancer

July 6 Carnival event raising awareness and funds as Spa manager battles cancer

A local woman's cancer battle has inspired an entire mountain to dedicate a day towards raising funds.

SilverStar Mountain Resort is hosting the inaugural Summer Spectacular in the village Sunday, July 6 in support of the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation.

"We were inspired by our spa manager’s story and ongoing battle with cancer and decided as a community to band together to raise as much money for local cancer care as possible," said Jennifer Gagne, fundraising coordinator.

"Our goal is to raise at least $10K for local cancer care, and we have several fundraising efforts in place to make that a reality."

The Summer Spectacular is a family oriented, carnival-themed event featuring several circus acts, live music and entertainment, along with carnival games, giant inflatables, a local farmers/vendors’ market, and silent auction.

Gondola rides will be offered by donation in support of the cause and the resort has given several raffle prizes, including a stay at the Snowbird with gondola tickets, four downhill Bike Park Passes and 4 VIP tickets to the beer and cider fest.

Kari Strynadka was diagnosed with an aggressive triple positive breast cancer in February and despite numerous difficulties, she has been striving to remain resilient, positive, and hopeful.

"With only two more intense chemotherapy treatments and nine additional treatments remaining, my medical team and I are cautiously optimistic about the outcome," said the 44-year-old mother.

Along with raising funds, Strynadka is hoping the event increases awareness and potentially saves lives.

"I encourage everyone to prioritize their health by conducting regular self-checks and mammograms, as I would not wish this journey on anyone."
