The Soft Cedar Performing Arts Society and R4AR (Respect For All Relations) will be hosting the Reweaving Kinship event in Saanichton, an evening of conversation and music dedicated to "upholding responsibilities to each other and to the more-than-human world."
Rooted in Indigenous resurgence and environmental justice, the June 25 event will include a panel discussion on Indigenous legal revitalization and the rights of nature, featuring WSANEC, Maori and Haida voices, alongside New York University's More Than Human Life Program.
The panel will be moderated by Robert YELKATTE Clifford, a professor at UBC's Allard Law School and a member of the Tsawout First Nation, whose work bridges WSANEC legal orders and land-based governance.
The discussion will be followed by a live concert featuring Dakota Bear, a renowned Vancouver-based Indigenous hip-hop artist and activist, with opener Young Sasha.
“Reweaving Kinship is about restoring relationships – to land, to law, to story, and to community. It is an invitation to unlearn and relearn about legal orders that honour the natural world as kin, rather than a resource," noted Clifford in a news release.
The June 25 event will be held at Langtry Walk at 1872 Stellys Cross Rd. with doors opening at 6 p.m. For tickets, visit wsanec.com.
