With Relay For Life just around the corner, the Canadian Cancer Society is in need of more volunteers to help with event organization, day-of help and entertainment.
The seventh annual Relay For Life is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday May 28 and will continue until 7 a.m. May 29 at the Williams Lake Secondary School track.
Last year, 19 teams consisting of 183 participants came together during the 12-hour celebration and raised more than $47,200 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Organizers say things are going very well and there is a lot of interest in the relay, especially with the extended daylight hours.
However, organizers would like to encourage participants to register before the Friday May 6 deadline, to be eligible to win a trip for two by VIA Rail from Kamloops to Edmonton.
“The main priority right now is to get as many volunteers and entertainers as possible to get involved,” says Leeyann Allan, leadership chair.
“We would like to see participation from all age groups and cultural backgrounds.
Because this year’s relay theme is “preventing cancer through living well, being aware and getting involved” organizers are encouraging residents and groups to showcase and share what living well means to them, whether it’s through dance, sport, music, exercise or healthy eating, Allan says.
Volunteers can get involved with any of the following areas: team services, survivor support, event logistics, luminaries, entertainment, ceremonies, food and beverage and set-up and take-down.
