The weather was windy and rainy at Parksville Bay Beach on April 6, but that did not stop residents from heading out to admire the wildlife and capture the scenery.

Well-known plein air painter Dan Gray, from Errington, was out on the beach with this pastels and easel, working on a likeness of a driftwood structure.

Gray and his wife started the Grand Prix d’Art exhibition at the Old School House in Qualicum Beach approximately 30 years ago, and he even has a trophy named after him in Steveston’s Grand Prix of Art.

He loves to work in soft pastel and has been painting outdoors from life for close to four decades.
