Once again, organizers are gearing up for the Move to Cure ALS event in Williams Lake.

This year, on June 15, the community is invited down to Boitanio Park for registration at 10 a.m., with most events kicking off at 11 a.m.

While a barbecue, live music, cake walk, kids activities, a 50/50 draw, garage sale, raffle baskets and more will be part of the day, the main event will include registered participants walking or rolling through the park to raise awareness about amytrophic lateral scherosis (ALS).

Charlotte Lundeen, one of the event organizers in Williams Lake, said support from ALS BC allowed her family to be able to care for her mom Darcelle Lundeen at home, during the last year and a half of Darcelle’s life after she was diagnosed with ALS.

The event aims to support those living with the debilitating neurogenetic disorder that affects a person’s muscle functions.

A person with ALS slowly loses their ability to move their limbs and often also lose their ability to speak or swallow, all while their mental capacity remains intact.

At any given time, there are around 400 people living with the disease, for which there is, unfortunately, no cure.

Each year, the ALS Society of BC organizes the Move to Cure ALS fundraising events across the province, with all of the proceeds going to patient services and research for a cure.

The event in Williams Lake is organized by a “small but dedicated crew” who have all lost a close family member to ALS.

You can register for the event via the ALS BC web page at alsbc.ca, or people can register in person at the event. Anyone who can’t make the event but would still like to support ALS BC can do so via the website, can purchase a raffle ticket at events in the community, including Williams Lake’s Friday farmers’ markets.

To donate to the garage sale, contact Charlotte at 250-267-4652. To volunteer for the June 15 event in Boitanio Park, contact the organizers at williamslakewalk@alsbc.ca.
