Miocene celebrates 45th anniversary of history of community hall

Local quilters created three new quilts for the occasion

Miocene community club honoured its founders and community hall on Father's Day 2024.

Part of the celebration saw the unveiling of three new quilts made by five local quilters - Suzie Ambrose, Heather Hudson, Lucy Martel, Sue Hall and Dolores Berkelaar.

Quilters were asked to make fabric blocks representing Miocene life as they knew it and those squares were used to make two of the quilts, Suzie said.

"The third has crayon drawings made by several Miocene children, transferred to fabric and quilted. Their quilt is to remind us of the future."

Kirk Ambrose made frames using local barn wood for the three quilts.

Suzie said in 1978 the community acquired land for a new, larger meeting place.

"Twenty-six acres was donated by Cunliffe Barnett and Lorne Sherlock from their leasehold," she said. "At the time, Sture Kallman, a local and general contractor, organized the community who participated with time, heavy labour, food for lunches or whatever else is needed."

The hall was built in 1979 and 1980.
