More than $7,000 was raised for KidSport Williams Lake

It was the Williams Lake Fire Department (WLFD) that took home the trophy after winning 10-8 against the Williams Lake RCMP in the Guns and Hoses Charity Game Friday, March 21.

More than $7,000 was raised which will go to KidSport Williams Lake.

There were 619 people in attendance and the evening was entertaining as soon as the doors opened.

Sparky the fire dog and RCMP Safety Bear were in the lobby to meet with children, and KidSport volunteers welcomed everyone as they arrived.

Later the two mascots rode in the WLFD and RCMP vehicles as they drove onto the ice and around the arena for a special presentation.

Mayor Surinderpal Rathor dropped the ceremonial cup and children sang O Canada before the game began.

As a means of poking fun, the fire department presented the RCMP with a box of Tim Hortons doughnuts, which at one point an RCMP player used for a little victory skate after getting a goal.

A few moments into the first period, the fire department got the first goal, followed by a second one, then a third before the RCMP answered back with five minutes left in the first period, followed by a second goal a minute later.

Depending on which side scored, a coinciding siren would blast out into the arena.

It was 4-2 for the WLFD at the end of the first period, 6-3 at the end of the second.

With less than four minutes left in the final period the RCMP tied the game at 8-8, followed by two goals from the fire department, with the fire department's 10th scored on an empty net.

Jarrett Moon travelled from Dogpound, Alta to play for the fire department. His father Dale Moon was fire chief for 20 years and a member of the department for 40. He died after a short battle with cancer in 2008.

When the fire department won, Jarrett accepted the Dale Moon Memorial Cup on behalf of the team.
