Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society provides skates for all

Keeping used skates out of the landfill while making winter recreation available to anyone

The Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society (CCCS) is once again continuing their Skates for All program to reduce waste and support active living in the community.

Almost anyone should be able to find a pair of skates to fit their needs, with the possible exception of non-humans.

“Pond skating is amazing right now,” said Mary Forbes, Waste Wise instructor for CCCS.

Forbes helps out with both the Bikes for All and Skates for All projects, which are aimed at preventing good, repairable bikes and skates from ending up in a landfill, while providing the gear for those who would otherwise not have a bike or skates.

Anyone with an old pair of skates they no longer use, can drop them off in one of the two community drop-off bin locations at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex downtown and Total Ice Training Centre at 45365 Cattle Drive.

Skates are collected, sorted, sent for sharpening at Caribou Source for Sports, which supports the program, and then made available at the office for free pick up for those who need them.

Anyone looking for a pair of skates can call the CCCS office to find out if their size is available, at 250-398-7929 or stop in to try some on Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Unit 102 197 2nd Avenue North in Williams Lake.

Each year, the organization collects hundreds of skates to distribute out to the community.
