The Broombusters are out and about eliminating the invasive plant species Scotch broom.

The invasive plant society's first cut of the season drew 20 volunteers on April 21, according to a news release by Broombusters

Enthusiastic volunteers cut the tall, dense broom along Alberni Highway, near the interchange, creating dozens of piles.

The broom's yellow blossoms are just starting to show, and from now until the seed pods form at the end of May, Broombusters will be hard at work.

Scotch broom is an alien invasive plant that spreads quickly and densely on any disturbed, open ground. It crowds out native species, slows forest regeneration, is toxic to grazing animals and takes over farms, parks and roadsides. Worst of all, it is a serious fire hazard.

“Having tall, dense broom on sides of our highways greatly increases fire danger in the community,” said Joanne Sales, Broombusters executive director.

FireSmart BC lists broom as one of the highest risk flammable plants in BC. A single plant produces 18,000 seeds which are viable in the soil for over 60 years. Fortunately, if cut properly at ground level, Scotch broom will die in the summer’s dry heat.

Volunteers donate their time for several reasons, to reduce fire risk, to stay in shape, meet new people and help the environment.

“I cut broom because I'm worried about the fire hazard in my community,” said volunteer Carol Doering.

Anyone is invited to participate and tools are supplied.

Broombusters Invasive Plant Society is a registered non-profit society in B.C. dedicated to controlling Scotch broom across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. The cut branches are harmless and are either chipped or hauled away.

Broombusters schedules community cuts each week until the end of May. The scheduled cuts are listed on their website: www.broombusters.org.
