Biannual event creates a Sunday buzz in Williams Lake

Free Your Threads saw some enthusiastic patrons picking through piles of free clothing to take home some treasures

Some people were trying to find out where to pay, while others piled up their treasured finds at the biannual Free Your Threads event on April 27.

The Sunday event in downtown Williams Lake was aimed to help keep more textiles out of the landfill, with textile waste and fast fashion being a major producer of pollution and waste worldwide and accounting for as much as eight to 10 per cent of global carbon emissions.

Initiated by NEXTGen Mercantile and Thrift Bucket, there were additional participants at the downtown event this time around, with the UBC Research Forest's Wild & Immersive hosting a table, Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society hosting a table and Go By Bike Williams Lake and Streets for All Williams Lake participating for part of the event.

Wild & Immersive offered young people a scavenger hunt to seek out different textiles in the racks and piles of free clothing for community members.

Oliver Berger of the Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society was showing how to turn an old t-shirt into a bag and how to cut t-shirts into fabric "thread" to use in macrame and other creative projects.

Streets for All Williams Lake volunteers were helping to promote Spring Go By Bike Week events and prizes, coming up May 31 to June 6.
