Part of the job of an MLA or any elected official is corresponding and reaching out to constituents to better understand the challenges throughout the riding. I’m not one to get caught up in the political theatrics happening in Victoria – I know that what really matters is the on-the-ground issues in my region.
As the youth of Cariboo-Chilcotin enjoyed free hot chocolate and practiced their skating skills, I had the chance to meet with individuals and families who voiced their concerns about health care, crime, and affordability. These conversations always remained respectful, good-natured, and informative, and for that I am grateful to these incredible communities. I share the concerns of those in my riding, and I have a long list of topics to address in the Legislature.
On the topic of skating, I must give a shout out to the 100 Mile House Skating Club. On April 5, they are hosting two spectacular ice shows at the South Cariboo Recreation Centre to celebrate their 50th anniversary, and they snagged Olympic medalist Elvis Stojko and professional show skater Gladys Orozco as their guest skaters! What a great opportunity for children in our area to become inspired by world-class athletes. The 100 Mile House Skating Club are an amazing bunch (even though they teased me about how my skates are getting too old and need to be replaced!)
Being on the ice again reminded me of my days playing men’s hockey. It was fantastic to see the next generation of figure skaters and hockey players as they glided around the rink. This is why people live in Cariboo-Chilcotin: they want a life of simplicity, wholesomeness, and connectedness.
It was also fantastic to join the community of Savona on Saturday evening to enjoy an incredible bean supper that was prepared by the Savona Area Seniors’ Society. Demonstrating true community spirit, Savona raised more than $5000 to support the local fire and rescue.
It really has been a great couple of weeks. I’m looking forward to so many upcoming events, including the Shriners dinner in 100 Mile and of course the 2025 Williams Lake Stampede Annual Dinner, Dance, and Auction.
I’ll see you around town – or maybe even on the ice again!
